Materials gathered by Mary L. (Muir) Cammann in preparation for a publication of the letters of the Jackson family from which she is descended. Includes original documents; typescript and photostat copies of letters from individuals and manuscript repositories; background materials and research collected on the family; and her correspondence during the process of research and preparation. Original documents include business papers of Ebenezer Jackson relating to the Tennessee Company, Ebenezer Jackson, Jr.'s passports and European travel journal, 1836-37, deeds for property in Middletown, Conn., and correspondence of Charlotte Fenwick Pierce Jackson, Ruth Jackson, and Josiah Tatnall. Copies include papers regarding Michael Jackson's service in the American Revolution and correspondence of Amasa Jackson, Simon Jackson, and William Pierce Leigh, Jr.

Ebenezer Jackson (1763-1837), the son of Michael and Ruth Jackson, was born in Newton, Massachusetts. At the age of 14, he enlisted in his father's regiment, the 8th Massachusetts Infantry; he served until 1783. Jackson moved to Savannah, Georgia, where he became a merchant, selling rice and cotton. He was also involved with the Tennessee Company and owned two plantations. In 1790, the State of Georgia gifted four land companies, including the Tennessee Company, with tracts of land that were officially Indian lands. The actions were overturned by President Washington. The main participants in the Tennessee Company were Zachariah Cox, Matthias Maher and John Sevier.
